North’s Shiftlock System: A New Era in Wing Foiling
At the AWSI trade show, North re-introduced the Shiftlock system, which launched this past spring on the Nova Pro model, offering a game-changing solution for wing foilers. The system is designed to provide riders with unparalleled flexibility, allowing for quick transitions between booms and handles while offering customizable placements to suit any rider’s preference. This innovative approach addresses many of the common challenges wing foilers have faced when choosing between traditional booms and handles.
Customizable Flexibility with Shiftlock
The standout feature of North’s Shiftlock system is its ability to allow riders to move, adjust, and even swap out handles and booms based on their style and conditions. Unlike other systems, which often lock users into one option or limit adjustability, Shiftlock provides multiple configurations.
“You can adjust the position of the handles or boom forwards or backwards based on your preference,” Huge Pinfold the designer explained. This freedom enables each rider to fine-tune their setup according to specific needs, whether they’re into freestyle, racing, or cruising.
Handle Design for Comfort and Control
North has introduced oval-shaped handles, featuring a unique finger bar at the bottom for improved grip and twist control. The ergonomic design helps eliminate common issues found in other handle designs, such as seams coming undone due to repetitive gripping.
“The finger bar gives you a lot more tactile control, and the seam runs along the top to avoid wear and tear,” said Huge Pinfold. Additionally, the ends of the handles feature a ribbed, soft-overmolded TPU material to prevent damage to boards during transitions, further improving the rider experience.
Easy Adjustment and Durability
Switching between different handle sizes is remarkably simple with Shiftlock. Whether you prefer shorter handles (like North’s 250 and 400 sizes) or a full 1100mm long boom, the adjustment process is seamless. A single rotation with the Torx T40 tool (which comes standard with the Nova Pro) loosens the handle or boom, allowing it to slide into the desired position. Once positioned, it can be easily locked into place with just a few twists of the tool.
“The system has been load tested to extreme levels, and it performed incredibly well, even under the most demanding conditions,” North emphasized. This durability gives riders confidence in the system’s reliability during intense sessions.
The Benefits of Booms vs. Handles
The Shiftlock system gives riders the freedom to choose between booms and handles depending on their personal preference and the conditions they face. Both setups have their distinct advantages, and North caters to both groups with the versatility of Shiftlock.
Booms
Booms offer a continuous grip area and greater control, particularly for riders who like to jump or need extra power in certain situations. A single boom across the wing’s width allows for quick hand adjustments, perfect for those who prioritize seamless transitions and increased control during maneuvers.
However, a common drawback of booms is the space they take up when traveling or storing gear. North addresses this issue by providing extendable bags for their Nova Pro wings, making it easier for riders to carry their booms without sacrificing portability.
Handles
Handles, on the other hand, allow for more compact storage and transport. For riders who prefer a minimalist setup or need to pack their gear into tight spaces, handles are an excellent option.
One of the key benefits of the Shiftlock system’s handles is the ability to position them anywhere along the strut, giving riders fine-tuned control. “With handles, you have the ability to move them to your sweet spot for your riding style,” North’s representative noted.
For beginners, handles can be easier to manage, providing a clear and intuitive grip point. In contrast, booms can sometimes be overwhelming for novice riders due to their continuous length and the temptation to grip too far from the center.
Advanced Features and Accessories
The Shiftlock system isn’t just about handles and booms; it also offers several innovative accessories, including paddle and action camera mounts. The paddle mount is particularly useful for riders who enjoy long upwind sessions, as it allows them to pack down their wing and switch to paddling for the return trip.
An action camera mount can be attached to the front or rear of the wing, allowing riders to capture their rides without worrying about securing external equipment.
The Future of Wing Foiling with Shiftlock
North’s Shiftlock system provides riders with a new level of flexibility and convenience, whether they prefer the comfort and control of handles or the stability of a boom. With adjustable positions, lightweight materials, and a durable design, the system adapts to the needs of every rider.
For those who love experimenting with their setup and fine-tuning their performance, Shiftlock is the ultimate solution. By offering both options with customizable adjustments, North has positioned itself at the forefront of wing foiling innovation.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to explore the sport, the Shiftlock system offers endless possibilities for tailoring your ride to match your style.
