Ocean Rodeo Glide AA-Series Wing Review: A Game-Changer in Wingsurfing
Brand: Ocean Rodeo
Model: Glide AA-Series
Discipline: All Around – Surf / Freestyle / Race
Size Tested: 5.0 meters
Overview: Ocean Rodeo’s Glide AA-Series wing introduces revolutionary material technologies that set new standards in the wingsurfing discipline. Known for its incredibly lightweight feel and exceptional stiffness, the Glide AA-Series is engineered for versatility, catering to surf, freestyle, and race disciplines. This review delves into the 5-meter model, celebrated for its performance in a range of conditions.
Test Team Feedback: Our test team was thoroughly impressed by the Glide AA-Series during sessions, noting its incredibly lightweight design that does not compromise on rigidity or power. The wing’s leading edge was among the stiffest tested, contributing to its “slippery fast feel” through apparent wind and excellent upwind capabilities. However, the team noted that while the carbon handles provide a clean aesthetic and reduced weight, they can become slippery when wet, contrasting with the preferred wrapped neoprene handle style for better grip during wet conditions. The new 46gsm Aeris X canopy material is mind bending! It is the most durable canopy we have ever tested, and it’s crazy light.
What We Loved
- Lightweight Construction: The wing’s ultra-lightweight design, made possible by the innovative Aeris X and Aeris materials, dramatically enhances handling and response. This lightness translates to superior pumping efficiency and ease of maneuverability in various wind conditions.
- Power and Control: Despite its lightness, the Glide AA-Series does not feel grunty but offers a fast and smooth ride. The stiff structure allows for precise control and efficient power management, making it ideal for advanced maneuvers and transitions.
- Upwind and Pumping Ability: Testers were particularly impressed with the wing’s upwind performance and response to pumping, attributing these characteristics to its optimized airfoil and high rigidity. The wing excels in maintaining speed and stability, making it a top choice for racing and freestyle sessions.
- Travel-Friendly Features: Acknowledged as the best travel wing by our team, its compactness and light weight make it easy to transport and quick to set up, ideal for riders who are often on the move.
What we didn’t like
- Handle Comfort in Wet Conditions: The sleek carbon handles, while reducing weight, may offer less grip when wet compared to traditional wrapped neoprene handles. This could affect control precision in wet and demanding conditions.
- Less Grunty Feel: Some riders who prefer a more immediate and forceful feedback might find the Glide AA-Series less satisfying. Its design focuses on speed and efficiency over raw power delivery.
Conclusion: The Ocean Rodeo Glide AA-Series is a groundbreaking wing, setting high standards with its use of ALUULA composites. It stands out for its exceptional lightness and stiffness, offering advanced riders a versatile tool for pushing their limits in surf, freestyle, and race disciplines. While it excels in many areas, potential buyers should consider handle preferences and the type of power delivery they are comfortable with. Overall, the Glide AA-Series represents a significant advancement in wing design, promising exhilarating performance and unmatched ease of use.
