2024 North Mode (Pro) Review
When it comes to high-speed performance in wingsurfing, efficiency is the key factor that sets the North Mode Pro apart. Engineered with state-of-the-art materials and design, this wing is optimized for top-tier performance without compromising on durability. I had the opportunity to ride the 2024 Mode with multiple foils during the North distributor meeting in Portugal.
The Mode boasts a high tensile strength N-Weave 45 X-ply reinforced woven fiber airframe, along with the Matrix N-HTRS canopy, making it the epitome of efficiency in power delivery. These innovative material technologies allow for a stiffer, lighter, and more durable wing, all while maintaining an accessible price point for high-performance enthusiasts. With the N-Weave 45 reducing structural deflection and channeling wind energy into forward speed, jumps become explosive and hangtime extends for freestyle tricks. The low-stretch, low-deflection Matrix N-HTRS canopy complements the N-Weave 45 airframe, expanding the wind range and ensuring consistent performance in all conditions. In the building afternoon winds in Portugal the exellent handling in strong winds really sets the Mode apart!
The Mode’s fast, VMG-optimized design enables you to sail closer to the wind, achieve higher upwind angles, and is really stable and comfortable in your hands. While primarily designed for high-speed performance, the stiffer airframe also translates into unmatched loft for higher jumps and exceptional forward momentum during landings. The wing is ultra smooth and balanced through tacks.
The Mode offers incredible high-end stability, making the 3.5 to 4.8m sizes ideal for stronger winds, while the 5.5m and 6.8m versions are optimized to generate greater power in lighter air conditions. The wing’s balanced lower aspect ratio with rounded wingtips minimizes tip strikes, and the new panel layout ensures enhanced wingtip stability and increased tension under load.
Equipped with Carbon GripLock rigid micro-trim control handles, the Mode guarantees an immediate response to your commands, enhancing maneuverability and control during transitions. Additionally, the gybe-friendly window positioning further adds to the overall ease of use. The seam of the grip has been moved making it virtually disappear to your touch.
Minus: While the Mode offers unmatched performance and innovative materials, its premium features come with a higher price tag compared to entry-level wings. This could be a consideration for budget-conscious consumers or those looking for a more affordable option.
Best For: The Mode is a high-speed performance wing that exemplifies efficiency and innovation. Its advanced materials and design not only deliver unparalleled power delivery but also provide excellent durability and stability. Whether you’re looking for explosive freestyle tricks or impressive hangtime, the Mode has got you covered. Not just for Pros, the North Mode Pro is deal for seasoned kite-riders seeking top-tier performance.
