One-Lock: A Game-Changing Innovation for Multi-Discipline Foiling
At the AWSI 2025 trade show, Slingshot’s latest innovation, the One-Lock system, made waves by securing the top spot in Windsurfing Magazine’s list of best new products. Pro rider Fred Hope, who played a major role in testing and refining the system, sat down with Windsurfing Magazine’s editor John Bryja to talk about this versatile and cutting-edge development.
A Universal Solution for All Foiling Disciplines
One-Lock was designed to simplify foiling across various disciplines—winging, kite surfing, dock starts, and even surf foiling. Its name stems from the core concept: a single locking mechanism that unifies and secures the entire foil assembly without any screws. This system eliminates the previous challenge of balancing Slingshot’s Hoverglide and Phantasm platforms, bringing all foiling applications under one platform for the first time.
“We’ve got zero screws,” Hope proudly explained. “It’s called One-Lock, and it’s just one latch that pulls everything together. Whether you’re winging, kiting, or dock-starting, the system is compatible with whatever type of foiling you want to do.”
Innovation Through Simplicity
One of the most significant aspects of One-Lock is its simplicity and ease of use. The system relies on a single latch that connects the stabilizer, front wing, and mast in a completely tool-free setup. Hope demonstrated how the stabilizer locks into place with the front wing through a triangular collar system, ensuring a secure and stable connection that only comes apart after specific maneuvering.
“We wanted a system that stays tight over time, unlike other systems that can loosen up after years of use,” Hope mentioned. “With One-Lock, after 10 years of use, it’ll still fit and perform as it did the first day you bought it.”
Minimizing Corrosion and Drag
A major focus for Slingshot was addressing common issues with corrosion and drag. By removing screws and opting for a seamless connection system, One-Lock avoids the corrosion that can affect aluminum fuselages in traditional foil systems. Additionally, the streamlined design minimizes drag by eliminating seams where water would typically flow, leading to a smoother ride.
“It’s like going from a Honda Civic to a Rolls-Royce,” Hope said, describing the smoothness of the ride. “With other systems, when you let out the power, the foil starts to drag down. With One-Lock, the lift stays true, even when you let off the power.”
Lightweight Yet Strong
Hope also highlighted the impressive weight savings of the new One-Lock system, particularly in their aluminum masts, which are only slightly heavier than their carbon counterparts. This is achieved through an innovative design that strengthens the mast without increasing its weight.
“Our aluminum mast is only 100 grams heavier than the carbon version,” Hope said. “There’s no weight penalty, which makes it really easy for people to get into foiling without sacrificing performance.”
Streamlined Product Line
Slingshot has simplified its product offerings, making it easier for riders to choose the right setup for their needs. Hope explained that the new system offers just three mast options—high modulus carbon, regular carbon, and aluminum—ranging from 72 cm to 92 cm. Each mast is designed for specific wind speeds and riding styles, with an optimized profile to maximize performance.
On the wing side, the company has narrowed down its options to three series: the Glide for general foiling, the E-series for more advanced riders, and the Kite series, which offers higher aspect ratios for more glide and speed.
A Durable and Long-Lasting Design
After years of testing and refinement, Slingshot has created a robust system that stands the test of time. Hope mentioned breaking around 20 front wings and 40 masts during the development process, but the final product is built to last, with reinforced collars and a better carbon layup that keeps the system stable under pressure.
“It took us about three years to develop, and we’ve worked hard to get the geometry and layup just right,” Hope said. “But now, One-Lock solves so many of the issues that riders have had in the past. It’s a real game-changer.”
Conclusion
Slingshot’s One-Lock system is set to revolutionize the foiling world, offering a simple, tool-free assembly that caters to all foiling disciplines. With no screws, no corrosion, and minimal drag, One-Lock promises an unmatched smooth ride and long-lasting durability. Whether you’re new to foiling or an experienced pro, One-Lock is designed to elevate your experience, making progression easier and more enjoyable.
